Appleton & gestions for restoring specie payments without Co. in a 12m0 of 374 pages. The author really undertakes an elucidation of the whole subject of paper money, believing that a proper settlement of this question must precede, and will lead up to, free trade. He sees great advantages in a mixed currency, with convertible bank-notes, considering that it develops the circulation of capital, but says there has never been a time in this country when bank-notes have not intruded beyond their proper sphere. He claims that the issue of inconvertible " is but a method of degreenbacks basing the currency, and challenges utterly the recent legal-tender decision of the Supreme Court. " |
