BOOKS AND CALICOES.

To the Editor of the Trade Circular:

SELMA, May 21, 1872. DEAR SIR-Apropos of Mr. Robert Clarke's opinion respecting the "Publishers and their Weekly," and your "Special Request" for credit to the TRADE CIRCULAR, of all orders made through its agency, I think it may interest you to learn that many retail dealers make up their orders for new books almost entirely from that journal.

this valuable list are thirty or forty pages of advertisements, which are themselves of considerable value as an index, and which supplement the list by adding many titles of school-books published abroad and sold here in the importers' stores. On the whole, in spite of the fact that some few of the smaller houses appear to have been careless about giving information to the compiler of this work, he has succeeded in getting together a mass of facts in regard to American educational literature such as has never before been gathered, and

he has so arranged it as to make it perfectly easy of access."-Nation.

NOTICE.

To Educational Publishers.

In response to the request of booksellers, who desire to use the new

notices of books, articles of EDUCATIONAL CATALOGUE,

I

If your stationery, etc., were somewhat fuller, think the retail trade would depend on the CIRCULAR for information to the total exclusion cf individual "Bulletins" which give only such notices and extracts as are calculated to insure orders for the books noticed, whether it be good or poor. It is certainly to the interest of every bookseller and stationer to have an impartial guide, and when such a guide is universally recognized by the trade, good books so noticed in it will invariably prove profitable ventures, and perhaps the publication of indifferent ones will not be as brisk as it is now.

It might be well for the "Publishers' Board of Trade" to consider the advisability and practicability of keeping the book trade confined more closely to the legitimate members thereof. Such a measure is particularly desirable in the South. What there is left of the business, we would like to retain! Some publishers complain that booksellers show no energy in the introduction of new books. We might show more, if every one-storecross-road-merchant selling calicoes, etc., could not send to New York and get from publishers direct, or through "Smith & Jones," from whom he regularly buys his calicoes, such books as he wants at lowest trade prices. Yours truly, WM. G. BOYD.

for the purpose of making up their Fall orders, the Trade editions will be issued

EARLY IN JULY.

Publishers who care to have their works fully and correctly represented, will please address as early as ready, two copies of their

or corrected lists, with retail prices, for the season 1872-73, to the

EDITOR OF THE TRADE CIRCULAR, 712 Broadway. For Particulars see pages 476 and 477.
