1. What are the various constituents into which the whole known as musical form is divisible.

2. Give a concise sketch showing the main outlines or "masses " which are characteristic of (a) Primary form, (b) Variation form, (c) the Rondo.

3. Give a brief technical analysis of the 1st movement of the tenth sonata of Beethoven op. 14, No. 2, dividing it into sections, quoting themes, and noticing distribution of keys.

4. Give a concise account of the inner significance of Binary form as conceived by Beethoven.*

* Especial importance will be attached to the answers given to question 4.

FOR PASS AND HONOUR CANDIDATES.

1. Analyse briefly and technically the first movement of the "Eroica" symphony, giving thematic quotations.

2. Point out the most striking instances of development in this movement; and comment on the spirit in which the different themes are conceived.

3. To what classical forms are the overture to "Lohengrin," the Funeral March in the "Götterdämmerung," the second act of "Tristan and Isolde" analogous? Remark on the main differences in the character of Wagner's treatment of these forms, and that of his predecessors.

4. Sketch very briefly the main principles underlying the musical form in Wagner's music-dramas; remarking on the greater unity of effect they produce as compared with the "operatic" form of the past.

1. What is the cause of voice-inflection ?

2. How does it come about that we can understand the emotion conveyed by voice-inflections?

3. Herbert Spencer says, that music not only excites our more familiar feelings, but also produces feelings we never had before; tells us of things we have not seen and shall not see. Explain this.

4. Why is certain music described truly as "vulgar" and "ignoble"; draw an analogy between such and our ideas of a "vulgar" man.

HISTORY AND ESTHETICS OF MUSIC.

1. What light have modern investigations thrown on the origin and function of music?

2. Compare the theories of Herbert Spencer and Schopenhauer, bringing out their similarity.

3. Sketch the development of the Binary Sonata form, comparing together J. S. Bach, Emmanuel Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and Wagner.

4. What are the main differences observable in the directions taken in the course of development of the Sonata, Quartette, and Symphony forms?

SECOND YEAR.

1. What is meant by a wave of sound, and by the length of a wave? Describe how sound is transmitted through the air.

What is the length of the sound wave produced in air by a tuning-fork making 256 complete vibrations per second?

2. A musical sound possesses three characteristics. What are they? Each of these characteristics depends on some physical property of the vibration. Explain fully.

3. Describe the siren, and how to use it to determine the pitch of a tuning-fork.

4. Give a short history of the development of the Diatonic Major Scale from the Greek Tetrachord.

5. Discuss, from a physical point of view, the relative harmoniousness of the perfect major and minor

chords.

6. Describe the different systems of temperament, and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.

JURISPRUDENCE.

The Board of Examiners.

1. Explain what is meant by a law in the sense in which law forms the subject-matter of jurisprudence, and state which, if any, of the following cases are instances of laws in that sense, giving in each case the reason for your answer.

(a) An order of a Justice of the Peace that the
defendant pay the complainant forty shillings.
(b) The provision in the Wills Act 1890 that no
will shall be valid unless in writing.

(c) A by-law of the council of a municipality im-
posing a penalty upon anyone riding on the
footpath.

(d) A declaratory Act.

2. Explain what is meant by a legal right, and give instances of legal rights.
