2. Explain fully the advantages of using helical gearing with parallel axes. How is the tendency

of such wheels to thrust each other apart eliminated?

3. Give a sketch to illustrate the working of an ordinary hydraulic crane, giving the proper relative positions of the three valves.

4. State what are the relative advantages of the following modes of distributing power:(1) Hydraulic pressure, (2) Compressed air, (3) Electrical transmission; and give your opinion as to the conditions under which each will work to the greatest advantage.

5. What are the different ways in which petroleum may be utilized to produce energy? Shew that if petroleum vapour be used in an ordinary steam engine the proportion of available energy should be increased.

6. Give a sketch of a good indicator, and explain the different methods adopted to make the pencil

trace a right line, shewing which methods are preferable, and why.

7. Draw an imaginary indicator diagram for a steam engine, in which steam is cut off at one quarter stroke, and plot on this diagram the position of a true adiabatic expansion curve, so as to compare with the expansion curve of the diagram, and give the method of calculating the indicated horse

power.

8. Make a drawing of a water-tube boiler, and state what advantages may be expected from such a boiler, and whence they arise.

9. Make a sketch of the new Robey steam engine, with details of Proëll's expansion valve gearing, or else of Marshall's engine with Hartwell's gearing.

10. State some of the effects of annealing in cast iron, wrought iron, and steel respectively, and explain the object of annealing punched rivet holes.

HYDRAULIC AND SANITARY ENGINEERING.

PAPER I.

The Board of Examiners.

Design in outline, the works necessary for a pumping supply to the township shewn on the accompanying plan, and lay out the reticulation, giving dimensions of the pipes, and shewing all necessary stop-valves, &c.

The population to be provided for is 1,500.

HYDRAULIC AND SANITARY ENGINEERING.

PAPER II.

The Board of Examiners.

Design a reservoir embankment in earthwork suitable for the site shewn on the accompanying plans, and write out the specifications for the work.

HYDRAULIC AND SANITARY ENGINEERING.

PAPER III.

The Board of Examiners.

Mark on the accompanying plan the positions of all necessary stops, sluices, outlets, bridges, occupation crossings, culverts, flumes or syphons, and subways, and give sketches shewing the arrangement of sluices, occupation crossings, and sub

ways.

HYDRAULIC AND SANITARY ENGINEERING.

PAPER IV.

The Board of Examiners.

Supply drawings, including longitudinal section, of an underground storm-water drain along Sydneyroad, from Moreland-road to O'Hea's-road, to drain the watershed area shewn on the accompanying contour plan; there are existing culverts in Moreland and Harding's roads, as shown on the plan.

Indicate on the plan the position of the drain and of all street gullies, manholes, and ventilators, and supply sketch plans, with dimensions, of a street gully.

MINING.

Mr. William Nicholas.

1. Given the bed of a modern river, which is auriferous; mention two distinct ways by which it might be worked, and the conditions that would decide in favour of one or the other.

2. Explain how you would make secure the "stopes" of a lode, the walls of which are weak.

3. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of the principles relating to rotary and stationary round buddles.

4. Briefly describe the mode of occurrence of a silver lode.

5. Under what circumstances is it advisable to employ a self-acting inclined tramway, and how should one be worked?

6. Explain what advantageous differences there are between mines worked by tunnels and by shafts.

7. Describe the process of preparing and placing in position a timber "set" in a drive.

8. Why is timber so generally used in mining for securing underground works, and explain its advantages?

9. What is meant by (a) a "sollar"; (b) "skid"; (c) underhand stoping; (d) miner's inch; (e) lift of pumps?

10. State the advantages and disadvantages of wages, and of contract work underground.

NOTE.-Illustrative sketches will enhance the value of replies to questions and explanations.
