CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE OF

RAILWAYS.

FIRST PAPER.

The Board of Examiners.

1. A railway is required in a country full of abrupt ranges (slopes 1 in 4 and 1 in 5), intersected by many creeks, heavily timbered, and with thick undergrowth, sparsely settled, the only roads are pack tracks. How would you carry out preliminary and permanent surveys for a line of railway? Give full particulars, including list of instruments, methods, precautions you would take, number and nature of assistants you would require, &c. County plans and geological plans are in existence.

2. Give, with example, a practical method of setting out side widths for cuttings in sideling ground.

3. It is necessary to examine neighbourhood of a railway for ballast. How would you set about it, and what would guide you in an ultimate selection of a quarry or ballast pit?

4. A cutting containing 100,000 cubic yards, and averaging 20 feet deep, through a sandhill full of springs, is required. Describe the best method of carrying it out, together with plant required, and proportion of men for each kind of work. The tip is on a rising grade, half a mile lead. How much per yard would you expect this to

cost?

5. A long low bank has to be constructed from side cutting in an agricultural district. Describe the plant necessary and method employed for construction, and state lowest price you think it could be done for.

6. There is a portion of a line where cuttings and banks balance. Under what circumstance would you throw material from cuttings to spoil, and make up banks from side cutting?

CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE OF
RAILWAYS.

SECOND PAPER.

The Board of Examiners.

1. Draw, to a scale of 1 inch to a foot, a cross-section of a single line of railway, 5 ft. 3 in. gauge, in hard rock cutting. Make a series of sketches showing details of the various joints and fastenings. Give full particulars as to weight and length of rails, size, material, and mode of preparation of sleepers, material, and preparation of ballast.

2. Give a sketch plan, and description, of a small terminal station for passenger, goods, and sheep traffic, suitable to a branch line of railway in Victoria.

3. What is meant by an interlocking system of points and signals? Draw a sketch plan of such a system for a junction on a double line of railway, and explain the construction and use of each part.

4. Make an outline sketch of a locomotive suitable for mixed traffic on a country line with easy curves and severe grades. Give full particulars as to dimensions of boiler, cylinder, and wheel, total weight, maximum weight per wheel, quantity of coal and water carried, steam pressure and tractive force, also original cost, and probable cost for fuel, attendance, and repairs per train mile.

5. Discuss fully the relative advantages and disadvantages of the various kinds of passenger rollingstock used on the Victorian Railways.

6. Give as full particulars as you can as to the staff and appliances needed, the work to be done, and the regulations to be observed, in maintaining a single line of railway 20 miles long, in a level country with numerous timber bridges and culverts.

7. State your views as to the probability or otherwise of electricity being employed for railway traction in the near future, pointing out special advantages and disadvantages compared with steam.

EXAMINATION FOR THE DEGREE OF

MASTER OF ARTS.

SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICS.

PURE MATHEMATICS.

The Board of Examiners.

1. State and prove Taylor's theorem, giving an expression for the remainder after n terms.

Expand e sec x as far as the term in x.

2. If the two sets of variables x, y, z, and E, n, be connected by three equations of the form

[blocks in formation]

change the variables from x, y, z to E, 1, 4, where ,, are the three values of a given by the cubic

[blocks in formation]

3. Find the equation of the circle of curvature at any point of the curve ƒ (x, y) = 0.

Find the condition that this circle may have contact of the third order with the curve.
