PREFACE

My first trip to the United States was made in 1905, but it was a very short one, as I could not spare more than three weeks for a stay in the country. This time, however, I have travelled almost all over the country, from Boston in the North to New Orleans in the South, thence to Chicago and then to the West. It is needless to say that the trip has been extremely interesting as well as instructive. The country is beautiful, grand, and up-to-date, according to the best standards of modern life. The buildings are magnificent and everything else, too, is on the grandest possible scale. In several respects the country is much more interesting than any in Europe. But it is not the describe either the purpose of this volume to

natural or man-created beauty of the land, but to embody the results of my studies in certain of its problems. My selection of subjects for particular study has been made with an eye to their practical usefulness for our own development. In several respects, the problems of the United States are very similar to those that face us in India, and I have thought that an account of them and of the manner in which they have been dealt within the United States might be of some help to us in India. The manuscript was completed, with the exception of two chapters on the history of the United States and
