Strana 210 - There was a Door to which I found no Key; There was a Veil past which I could not see: Some little Talk awhile of ME and THEE There seemed — and then no more of THEE and ME. XXXIII Then to the rolling Heav'n itself I cried, Asking: 'What Lamp had Destiny to guide Her little Children stumbling in the Dark?' And — 'A blind Understanding!
Strana 308 - Roll'd to starboard, roll'd to larboard, when the surge was seething free, Where the wallowing monster spouted his foam-fountains in the sea. Let us swear an oath, and keep it with an equal mind, In the hollow Lotos-land to live and lie reclined On the hills like Gods together, careless of mankind.
Strana 114 - Ay, but to die, and go we know not where ; To lie in cold obstruction, and to rot ; This sensible warm motion to become A kneaded clod ; and the delighted spirit To bathe in fiery floods, or to reside In thrilling regions of thick-ribbed ice ; To be imprisoned in the viewless winds, And blown with restless violence round about The pendent world...
Strana 379 - Congress record its opinion that the exploration of the Antarctic regions is the greatest piece of geographical exploration still to be undertaken. That, in view of the additions to knowledge in almost every branch of science which would result from such a scientific exploration, the Congress recommends that the scientific societies throughout the world should urge, in whatever way seems to them most effective, that this work should be undertaken before the close of the century.

Strana 291 - By backing and filling the sails, we endeavoured to avoid collision with the larger masses, but this was not always possible ; in the early part of the storm the rudder of the Erebus was so much damaged as to be no longer of any use ; and about the same time I was informed by signal that the Terror's was completely destroyed, and nearly torn away from the stern post.
Strana 81 - The inner parts of the country were not less savage and horrible. The wild rocks raised their lofty summits till they were lost in the clouds, and the valleys lay covered with everlasting snow. Not a tree was to be seen, not a shrub even big enough to make a tooth-pick.
Strana 75 - January preserved the blessing of health; to the sick, whose crippled limbs were tortured with excessive pain, it was insupportable. The ocean about us had a furious aspect, and seemed incensed at the presumption of a few intruding mortals. A gloomy melancholy air loured on the brows of our shipmates, and a dreadful silence reigned amongst us.
Strana 63 - This is a greater extent than the whole civilized part of Asia, from Turkey to the eastern extremity of China. There is at present no trade from Europe thither, though the scraps from this table would be sufficient to maintain the power, dominion, and sovereignty of Britain, by employing all its manufacturers and ships.
Strana 379 - London, in the year 1895, with reference to the exploration of the Antarctic Regions, expresses the opinion that this is the greatest piece of geographical exploration still to be undertaken ; and in view of the additions to knowledge, in almost every branch of science, which would result from such...
