VOL. XXVIII.

ILLUSTRATION of the FRONTISPIECE.

T was cuftomary with the ancient Romans, upon the acceffion of a new Prince to the imperial throne, to exprefs, by fome emblematical device on the public coins, on medals, or other like monuments of fame, the Fælicitas Regni or Imperii they expected from his government. It must give infinite pleasure to the fubjects of Great Britain, that they can in this manner honour the beginning of the reign of their auguft Monarch, GEORGE THE THIRD; not with hearts of fervile adulation, as the Romans were wont; not with wifhes which oppreffive tyranny made vain; but with hearts of fincere confidence in his patriotic difpofition; and with wishes, which his royal word to preferve their conflitution, has given them the strongest hopes to fee accomplished.

The Proprietors of the Univerfal Magazine, elated with this profpect of Britain's future happiness, have endeavoured to exprefs their fenfe of it in the annexed Frontilpiece. They are alfo glad to fee recorded, in their memoirs of the tranfactions of the last year, the total reduction of the French empire in North America; and perhaps the time is approaching, when the goodness of the British caufe, the known wisdom and abilities of his Majefty's Miniftry, and above all the zeal and firmness of all orders amongst us for the fupport of the prefent war, will induce France to think seriously of her state of humiliation, and fue for a peace. May our country enjoy it fafe, permanent, and glorious; and may all other nations in like manner tafte of its bleffings, at least as long as we and they have the fenfe to value peace, and the virtue to deferve it.

This then will be confidered by grateful pofterity as the true æra of British felicity. It will acquire fresh force and vigour with age, and at length will extend its influence to every part of the political fyitem.
