From General Leonard Wood:

I feel sure that its circulation will be of great value in giving our people a better idea of the Civil War. The photographs are very good.

When the War broke out, Mathew Brady, the famous New York photographer, who charged $100 for a sitting, gave up his splendid business and went into the fight with his camera. By special permission from Lincoln and under protection of the Secret Service, he and his men took more than half of the 3800 photographs, so dramatically discovered fifty years later. It is a genuine feat to have produced this History; the photographs thus collected are not only of a permanent value, but will have a steadily increasing value for the historian as time elapses.

The camera knew neither emotion nor feat. Its business was to see and to tell. And how :: tells to our peaceful world of today the tale : that glorious fight.

So here in these ten volumes you get thousands and thousands of photographs, Union and Confederate, taken by Brady and his followers, bi Confederate spies, by Confederate photographers in Charleston and New Orleans. They sweep over the whole field of war, from its beginning to its end. They cover its every phase, its minutest detail, its biggest campaign.
