VOL. II. OF A NEW AND IMPROVED EDITION

OF THE

PLAYS AND POEMS

OF

SHAKSPEARE;

WITH A LIFE, GLOSSARIAL NOTES,

AND ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY ILLUSTRATIONS
FROM THE PLATES IN BOYDELL'S EDITION.

EDITED BY A. J. VALPY, M.A.,

LATE FELLOW OF PEMB. COLL., OXFORD.

NUMEROUS and varied as are the forms in which the
Works of SHAKSPEARE have appeared, it will be rea-
dily acknowleged that an improved edition, printed in
the same form as the most popular productions of the
present day, is still a desideratum.

The text of MALONE, as published in 1821, in twenty-
one volumes 8vo, will be adopted; GLOSSARIAL NOTES
on all obsolete words will be given; and a brief His-
TORICAL DIGEST prefixed to each Play.

In addition to the many advantages offered in the
present edition, it will be embellished with ONE HUN-
DRED AND SEVENTY ILLUSTRATIONS, executed on
steel in the first style of outline engraving, from the
Plates in BOYDELL'S SHAKSPEARE, which was ori-
ginally published at £95, and large paper at £190.

The attention of the youthful reader will be directed
to the MOST STRIKING AND BRILLIANT PASSAGES by
an INDEX, which will be printed at the end of the
work, and which will form a complete reference to the
BEAUTIES of SHAKSPEARE.

The number and excellence of the illustrations, and

the style of the letter-press, will render the present
edition superior to any yet published; while the con-
venience and portability of the form adopted, and the
moderate terms on which it may be purchased, will
merit the approbation of every admirer of the Bard of
Avon.

OPINIONS.

The first volume is embellished with a set of engravings in outline by Starling, from the famous illustrations published by Boydell. The typography is neat and clear; and the text we assume to be correct, from the name of the editor.'-Spectator.

'The volume contains a great number of illustrations, after many of our celebrated artists, executed with fidelity and truth. The whole work gives promise of a most delightful companion to every library where taste and beauty, combined with correctness of typography, form a leading object with the reader.'-Satirist.

Looking on the work as a whole, on the portrait and the thirteen outlines, which really come for nothing, and yet stand for much, we cannot deny that this work is worthy of its source; and we have not a doubt that the public will appreciate the labor, and reward the laborers in this vineyard.'Atlas.

'Mr. Valpy has conferred a great benefit on the public by this cheap and graceful edition of the works of the 'world's first wit.' Of the style in which it is got up we cannot speak too warmly. Its mechanical department, such as paper, print, &c., is perfect, and the addition of Boydell's well-known embellishments renders it the most finished work of the sort we have.'-Sun.

'The excellence of the illustrations, and the style of the letter-press, are superior to any edition we have yet seen
