Among early American novels which have kept a place in literary history and memory, though not often found on the modern bookshelf, is Susannah Rowson's "Charlotte Temple," now reprinted with an introduction by Francis W. Halsey (Funk & Wagnalls, $1.25), telling the real -story of this unfortunate girl, whose tombstone in Trinity churchyard is still occasionally an object of sentimental pilgrim

age. There is commemoration, also, of

Mrs. Rowson, a worthy and industrious writer and of the later perversions of the story of which her novel was the largely innocent cause. Reproductions of old prints add greatly to the interest of the volume.

A convenient clue to what has appeared in the five years, from 1900 to 1904, in the chief American and English periodicals, is to be found in "The Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature," published by the H. W. Wilson Company, of Minneapolis. ($16.) This volume of 1,640 pages takes up the matter where the abbreviated Poole left it and will be followed, it is expected, at similar five-year intervals, by like cumulations of the same publisher's monthly, "Reader's Guide." Articles are indexed under subjects as well as authors, thus a person desiring to see at a glance what has been written up to the close of 1904, on "Industrial Insurance," for instance, would find all articles on that subject grouped under the appropriate head, and all contributions of any writer to periodicals under his name. It is this classification that gives the book its chief value, supposing, of course, that the periodicals which it indexes are accessible to the reader.
