The Choir.

(Continued from page 718.)

for the first time in Boston, and Gustave Charpentier's "Poet's Life" which the society produced for the first time in America, last season.

Strauss's work made but little impression. The story of Taillefer, the minstrel who at the historic and eventful Battle of Hastings did many curious feats, is picturesque, and the poem of Uhland, while not faithful to the actual history, has many vivid portions. Strauss has attempted the musical picture through the orchestra, and in consequence neither soloists nor chorus have much to do, and that little is far from proving of real interest. The orchestration has not the peculiar characteristics noticed in many of Strauss's symphonic poems, excepting perhaps the noise. The score calls for about every instrument known to modern times, and if memory serves, the orchestra demanded is 150 or more. At this performance there might have been fifty, and consequently the score was not adequately presented. But it is doubtful if the work would prove acceptable, even with an ideal presentation.

The chorus sang the uninteresting choruses with careful attention to detail and excellent volume of tone. The solo parts were well given, although the music written lacks interest of any sort.

Charpentier's work, on the other hand, proves to be, on a second hearing, one of much power and imagination. While in the ultra-modern spirit, it is not a clear exhibition of the possibilities of the whole step, six note scale, ad nauseam, in the manner of many up-to-date French composers, as well as C. M. Loeffler, who is living in our midst. The text of "The Poet's Life" is one not easily understood or appreciated by any excepting those who are familiar with Parisian life, but the music is something that will appeal strongly to many.

The performance was excellent, all things considered. Probably under a conductor of temperament, the strength of the work would have been more in evidence, but despite certain shortcomings the presentation was most enjoyable.

Among various recent Lenten choir services one of especial importance was the performance of Stainer's "Crucifixion" at St. Stephen's church, Lynn, by the regular vested choir of the church under direction of Mr. Percy Graham. The several organ recitals during the recent season, at Emmanuel church, given by Arthur S. Hyde, have been most enjoyable occasions.

The United States is the largest sugar-consuming country in the world, though the per capita consumption in this country is not as great as in the United Kingdom. The total consumption in 1904 aggregated 2,767,000 tons, making an average consumption for each individual for the year of about 75 pounds. The estimate of Willett and Gray, acknowledged authorities in sugar production and consumption, puts

the consumption for the year 1905 at ARUNDEL CHROMOS.

2,632,000 tons, though this doubtless represents a larger value than that of the preceding year, by reason of the increased prices which prevailed in the various sugar-producing countries of the world

"C

It was through Catholic missionaries, in the seventeenth century, that the existence of Jewish community of from 5,000 to 6,000 members in Kai-Fung-Fu and other cities of China was made known," writes. Dr. Isidore Singer in the North American Review. "The inscriptions in Chinese found on the marble tablets of the ancient synagogue of Kai-Fung-Fu, and dated 1489, 1512 and 1663, respectively, throw unexpected light upon this hitherto entirely unknown chapter of Jewish history. The episode, at the beginning of the seventeenth century, of the Jesuit priest, Father Matteo Ricci, and the young Chinese Jew who, seeing at the mission the portrait of the Virgin with the infant Jesus, believed it to be Rebekah with Esau or Jacob, is certainly one of the most interesting in the religious history of mankind. In 1760, Isaac. Nieto, rabbi of London, addressed a Hebrew letter

Watch Tacoma Grow! to the Jews of China, asking for informa

tion concerning their and present
condition. Their answer, written in Chinese
and Hebrew, has unfortunately not been
preserved. A letter which James Finn, Brit-
ish consul at Jerusalem, received in 1870
disclosed the utter destitution and religious
decay of the few Chinese remnants of the
house of Israel. Former attempts (1852,
1864) on the part of the Jews of England
and of the United States to offer
hand to their far-off coreligionists failed,
owing to the T'ai P'ing Rebellion, the Civil
War and other causes. In 1900, the com-
munity of Kai-Fung-Fu numbered 140 souls,
without a leader, a synagogue or a regular
school system. It is to be hoped that the
Society for the Rescue of the Chinese Jews
will succeed in bringing order out of the
Judeo-Chinese chaos."

The Insured, under Policy No. 345,627 for $1,000, had been making monthly payments from his wages on a small home in the country, and at the time of his death there was still $500 due. The amount of money laid aside in the bank for a rainy day" was exhausted before the death of the insured and, despite his illness, he was being pressed hard for the payment of the mortgage. With the insurance money the mortgage was paid, and the widow applied for a $1,000 policy on her own life, paying a single premium. In this case the original policy served as a guarantee for a home for the family and also $1,000 of paid-up insurance for the protection of the five children left to the widowed mother.
