HE town of Nimes, situated in the south-east of France, about midway between Avignon and Montpelier, was formerly geographically known as a city of some importance in the province of Languedoc, and is now the capital of the Department du Gard. It has always been a place of some note, and it has lately been included in the programme of towns to be visited by the present prince-president of France, in his recent progress through a portion of the country over which he rules. If there be any spot in France where Louis Napoleon has an hereditary claim to a sincere welcome, that spot assuredly is NIMES; for, under the auspices of his uncle, the great Napoleon, that town enjoyed more general tranquillity and prosperity than it had ever done under the Bourbon dynasty. The last imperial reign gave, comparatively speaking, halcyon days to Nimes; but it will be well to take a short survey of the origin and early history of the town, before glancing at these days, and at the very different ones which succeeded them, when the united arms of outraged Europe-directed by the consummate skill of that great military chief, who, laden with years and well-deserved honours, has lately terminated his distinguished career on earth-overthrew the celebrated conqueror and maker of kings, Napoleon Bonaparte.

Nimes is so very ancient a place, that historians find it impossible to indicate the date of its first foundation; but a colony of Phocians
