From the importance and the extent of the sphere of Christian activity, in which, during a long course of years, it was the happiness of my revered Father to move, some Memoirs of his Life may be naturally and reasonably expected. The mournful yet deeply interesting task of preparing these for the press has devolved on me, as the eldest son, at the request of my dear brothers. To my own mind it is not only a welcome relief, but a source of inexpressible satisfaction, to be able to present to the Christian public, Memoirs which, though brief, are comprehensive and characteristic, from my beloved Father's own pen. It does not indeed appear that they were intended to meet the eye.
