REMARKS.

Mileage, from and after July 1, 1898, is allowed to officers traveling on duty under orders, at the rate of seven cents per mile, by the shortest usually traveled routes, payable by the Pay Department. Act March 15, 1898. Commutation of quarters to be paid by Pay Department, $12 per month per room.-[Act June 23, 1879]; General Orders, No. 64, Adjutant General's Office, series of 1879. The sums herein before allowed shall be paid in monthly payments by the Paymaster.-[Section 1268, Revised Statutes.] Vouchers in payment of an officer's salary must cover his whole compensation (full or half pay, according to status) for a period of one or more calendar months.

The pay of a man who has ever reenlisted under the Act of August 4, 1854, and who reenters the service more than three months after discharge, commences with amount
stated in this column.
+ Enlisted men of this corps are entitled to increased pay for length of service, the same as other enlisted men. Hospital Stewards rank with Ordnance Sergeants and are
entitled to all the allowances of that grade; Acting Hospital Stewards to be detailed from privates of the Hospital Corps; privates of the Hospital Corps are entitled to the
allowances of a Corporal of the arm of service with which they are on duty.-[Act March 1, 1887; G. O. 29, A. G. O., 1887.1

Two Veterinarians to each cavalry regiment. One to have the pay and allowances of a Second Lieutenant of Cavalry, and one to have $75 per month and the allowances
of a Sergeant Major.-[Act March 2, 1899.]
An additional $1 per month for each subsequent period of five years.

CLOTHING. Will be settled six months after the date of enlistment, and thereafter on June 30 and December 31, of each year.-[General Orders, No. 42. Adjutant General's
Office, series of 1890.] Balances found due United States to be charged soldier on muster rolls of those dates. Balances due soldier to be carried forward on company books
credited to his current clothing account; any balance remaining due him at discharge to be credited on final statements.-[Section 1302, Revised Statutes.]

The enlisted force of the Signal Corps shall hereafter consist of fifty Sergeants, of whom ten shall be of the first class, with the pay of Hospital Steward.-[Act October 1,
1890: G. O. No. 124, series of 1890.] The remaining forty Sergeants have the pay of Engineer Sergeants.-[Act June 20, 1878; G. O. No. 41, series of 1878.]
Enlisted men (retired) are entitled to three-fourths of the monthly pay allowed by law to them in the grade they held when retired, with commutation of clothing and
rations.-[Act February 14, 1885; G. O 55, A. G. O., 1885.] Rations and clothing commuted at $9.50 per month.-[Act March 16, 1896.] Not entitled to traveling allowances on
retirement, but to transportation in kind by the Quartermaster's Department.

A certificate of merit entitles a soldier to $2 per month additional pay, commencing on the date of rendering "distinguished service" and continuing through all subse-
quent service as an enlisted man.-[Sections 1216 and 1285, Revised Statutes, and Act of February 9, 1891.] The Court of Claims decided May 29, 1893, that the Act of February
9, 1891, is retroactive and entitles to pay from date of the service, not merely from the date of the act.

The period within which soldiers may reenlist with the benefits conferred by sections 1282 and 1284, Revised Statutes, is extended to three months.-[Act August 1, 1894.] Hereafter every enlisted man in the Army shall be entitled to all the benefits conferred by sections 1281 and 1282, Revised Statutes.-[Act August 1, 1894.] Hereafter all enlistments in the Army shall be for the term of three years.-[Act August 1, 1894.]

Traveling allowances are forfeited when soldier is discharged, by order of the Secretary of War, for disability caused by his own misconduct.-[Act March 16, 1896.] Twenty per cent increase on pay proper of all enlisted men is allowed in time of war.-[Act April 22, 1898.]
