PREFACE.

The very kind reception accorded, both by the Bench and by the Bar, to the first two editions of this little book, which were exhausted within about four months of their appearance, and the numerous applications for it that have since been received from all parts of India, have encouraged the compiler to issue a third edition at a time when most of the enactments have undergone material, and, in some instances, complete alteration.

In this edition, two fresh volumes have been added to the previous two, the first two volumes containing, as before, what is known as the Civil portion of the law, the third volume containing the Rent and Revenue laws as administered in the Lower Provinces of the Presidency of Fort William in Bengal, and the fourth volume containing what is known as Criminal law. These four volumes will, it is hoped, be found to contain all that is usually referred to by the Judge, the Lawyer, and the Student.

As will be seen, the size of each Volume has been considerably enlarged, while the price has been maintained in tact. An Index, though not within the scope, and rather unsuited to the capacity, of a book of this size, has been, at the request of friends, appended to the first, and, perhaps, the most important Act in each volume, and the Indian Trusts Act (II of 1882) and the Indian Easements Act (V of 1882), though their operation has not yet been extended to this Presidency, have been added to the second volume as Acts of general importance involving principles of law constantly referred to by practitioners.

The book has been thoroughly revised, after it was printed, every material mistake that crept into it has
