Dr.

Miles' Pain Pills.

"As a result of neuralgia I lost the sight of my right eye, and the pain I have suffered is incomprehensible, being obliged to take opiates almost continually. A friend gave me one of Dr. Miles' Pain Pills and it promptly relieved me. I then purchased a box and now my trouble is gone. They have also cured my daughter of nervous headache, and I heartily recommend them to others."-W. J. CORLEY. Bre mond, Texas.

"CHILDREN," said the teacher, while instructing the class in composition, according to The Baltimore American, "you

should not attempt any flights of fancy,

be yourselves, and write

is in you. Do not imitate any other per-
son's writings or draw inspiration from

outside sources." As a result of this ad

vice Johnny Wise turned in the following
composition: "We should not attempt any

flites of fancy, but rite what is in us. In

me thare is my stummick, lungs, hart,
liver, two apples, one piece of pie, one
stick lemon candy and my dinner."

A RECENTLY published story of the late Lord Morris illustrates, says The Youth's Companion, his scorn of red tape and petty details. A question had arisen as to the cost of heating the Irish law courts, and a consequential treasury official was sent over from London to Dublin on purpose to investigate the matter. When he introduced himself and explained his errand, Lord Morris smiled with suspicious blandness and said: "Certainly, I will put you in communication with the person immediately in charge of that department." Then he sent out a messenger, and presently there entered an old charwoman. Lord Morris arose and left the room, saying as he did so: "Mary, here is the young man to see about the coal."

PROFESSOR MUNSTERBERG, of Harvard, whose specialty is psychology, relies, says The Boston Herald, to some extent on the point of a good story in enforcing his positions in abstract demonstration. He has one on the association of ideas that will illustrate. A mediaeval magicianmore accurately called "fakir" nowadays -announced that he had invented and had for sale a magic pot. If certain rather common stones were mixed and placed in the pot, with a certain portion of water, and the whole shaken diligently for an hour, the stones would turn to gold-provided that during the hour the operator should not think of a hippopotamus. The fakir sold a great many for fabulous sums, and not one of the purchasers ever demanded a return of the money. The fakir knew his business. He was in advance of his age in psychology, in his skill in permanently fixing in his customer's minds the association of that old pot and a hippopotamus.

Does Not Disappoint

The New Discovery for Catarrh Seems

to Possess Remarkable Merit.

A new catarrh cure has recently appeared which so far as tested has been remarkably successful in curing all forms

of catarrh, whether in the head, throat, bronchial tubes, or in stomach and liver.

The remedy is in tablet form, pleasant and convenient to take and no special secrecy is maintained as to what it contains, the tablet being a scientific combination of Blood root. Red gum and similar valuable and harmless antiseptics.

The safe and effective catarrh cure may be found at any drug store under the name of Stuart's Catarrh Tablets.

Whether the catarrh is located in the nose, throat, bronchial tubes, or stomach, the tablets seem to act with equal success, removing the stuffy feeling in head and nose, clearing the mucous membrane of throat and trachea from catarrhal secretions, which cause the tickling, coughing, hawking and gagging so annoying to every catarrh sufferer.

Nasal catarrh generally leads to ulceration, in some cases to such an extent as to destroy the nose entirely and in many old cases of catarrh the bones of the head become diseased. Nasal catarrh gradually extends to the throat and bronchial tubes and very often to the stomach, causing that very obstinate trouble, catarrh of the stomach.

Catarrh is a systemic poison, inherent in the blood, and local washes, douches, salves, inhalers and sprays can have no effect on the real cause of the disease. An internal remedy which acts upon the blood is the only rational treatment and Stuart's Catarrh Tablets is the safest of all internal remedies, as well as the most convenient and satisfactory from a medical standpoint.

Dr. Eaton recently stated that he had successfully used Stuart's Catarrh Tablets in old chronic cases, even where ulceration had extended so far as to destroy the septum of the nose. He says: "I am pleasantly surprised almost every day by the excellent results from Stuart's Catarrh Tablets. It is remarkable how effectually they remove the excessive secretion and bring about a healthy condition of the mucous membranes of the nose, throat and stomach."

AS AN INVESTMENT We believe this to be one of th safest, surest and most profitab that could be entered into. It safer than a Savings Bank, as it not subject to panic, while the pro pective profits are infinitely grea er. It is the surest because, as matter of history, New York Ci property has steadily increased value ever since the city was ori nally formed. It is bound to profitable because there is no oth land within the same distance New York City Hall that can had for anything near as low price. This because New Yo has become so congested that t density belt" has advanced to t very gates of our properties, whi are directly in the line of this c velopment.

Order Spring Work Now.

From two to six months are required to properly manufacture a monument. Careful designing, careful cutting and careful setting (and we do only the careful sort) use up a good deal of time.

Hence we remind those whom it may concern that we are NOW ready for Spring orders and that there is really no time to lose.

We select only granite of the highest quality, and (of great importance) we exercise particular

care in the setting-giving to this fundamental detail the strictest supervision.
Our prices are reasonable, since we recognize no middlemen, but deal direct with
the consumer, who therefore has but one moderate profit to pay.

We use Quincy, Westerly, Barre, or any other leading monumental stone, as the need may be.

We employ experienced designers and sculptors, and we ship our work to all parts of this country and Canada-a sure evidence of its popularity.

Literary Notes.

"The Life of an Elephant," by the author of "The Life of a Bear," and "The Life of a Bear," by the author of "The Life of an Elephant" (Gorham, $1.25 each), are new editions of books which, to judge from the illustrations, must have first appeared about the middle of the last century. The "Elephant" is the better, but neither had any imperative claim for resurrection.

FINANCIAL.

George A. Treadwel Mining Company

Jerome, Arizona

South Africa is the scene, and the Boer 27 William St., New Yor war the occasion, of "The Cape and Its Story" (Nelson), a history graphically told of the struggle for South Africa, from its first exploration and settlement by the Portuguese and Dutch to the capture of Pretoria. The story is told, of course, from the English point of view, but with no offensive partisanship, and may be commended to those who are in search of a readable and comparatively brief account, with a dash of romance, of the moulding causes of the present situation. The illustrations in color are good; that of Capetown quite exceptional.

"Adventurers All," by K. M. Eady (Nelson, $1), though it comes to us from over sea, makes a direct appeal to American boys, for it is a tale of the Philippines chiefly during the insurrection before the American declaration of war. Aguinaldo is a prominent figure, and is treated with sympathetic appreciation. The Americans of the book and their language afford a somewhat amusing opportunity to see and hear ourselves as we are seen and heard across the water.

"Old King Cole's Book of Nursery Rhymes" (Macmillan, $1.75), is a luridly illustrated volume, containing a collection of child verses with many of which Mother Goose has already made us familiar. The illustrations are the principal part of the book, but are best viewed through smoked glass.

We should hardly venture to assume that Miss Josephine Dodge Daskam intended the title of her "Fables for the Fair" (Scribners, $1) as an aspersion upon her own sex, but it is to be hoped most of "the fair" would be offended by the insipid inanity of these fables, which is the more surprising, as Miss Daskam's former volumes had given good promise of a worthier maturity.

Mr. Claude H. Wetmore, the author of "Fighting under the Southern Cross" (Wilde, $1.50), was on the scene of action during the Chile-Peruvian War, with which his story deals, and he has put much of the spirit of the time and place into his work. It is well written and interesting, and attracts also by its quiet

cover.

"Lester's Luck" (Coates), a posthumous work of that veteran of our juvenile literature, Horatio Alger, Jr., shows that his hand preserved to the end much of the cunning that commanded success for "Ragged Dick," when its author was as yet unknown. Those who have had experience of the world might urge that there is too much "luck" in Lester's good fortune, but boys will appreciate the pluck of it, and rejoice in prosperity that was deserved at least, even if it was not earned.

The South African War has been a subject of up-to-date fiction now for several seasons in England, and it has still a sufficient actuality to give to Mrs. Meade's "A Sister of the Red Cross" (Nelson, $1.25) a certain poignant interest, though, in spite of the heroine's insistence that there shall be "no courting in Ladysmith," we have less of the real romance of the nurse's life as it appeared, for instance, in the hospital sketches of Louisa Alcott, or yet more poignantly in the Toncourts' "Sister Philomene," than we have of the rather commonplace emotionalism of propinquity. Mrs. Meade has not made the most of her subject.

An Unusual Opportunity for Safe Investment

The Racine Knitting Co., of Racine, Wis., is offering for popular subscrip tion 10,000 shares now remaining in its treasury, at par, ten dollars per share, full paid, non-assessable, and drawing full regular semi-annual dividends guaranteed to amount to at least 3% (six per cent. per annum).

This company is engaged in the manufacture of the widely advertised RACINE FEET and Racine brand of hosiery and underwear. The product is sold by mail order methods direct to the consumer, either from the mill by catalogue, or through local salesmen.

The possibilities of the mail order field are peculiarly fascinating. The direct sales method is at present in its infancy, but is rapidly being adopted in all leading lines. The industries which have passed the experimental stage are pioneers in a new field in which competition is limited.

As a result of vigorous advertising, the Racine Knitting Co. have established a good will, which is one of its most valued assets. Through the appreciation of satisfied customers it has learned the value of personal influence. The popular subscription plan is to extend this by making each one of many stockholders actively interested in the extension of trade.

The business has outgrown its infancy, the experimental stage is past, the company is splendidly equipped and is working on a proven policy, Every feature is endorsed by recognized authorities.

DIVIDENDS ARE GUARANTEED

The present earning power of the company is such that its officers, who are responsible individually, give an unqualified personal guarantee that annual dividends of at least six per cent. per annum shall be paid in semiannual instalments on the first days of January and July each year.

In view of past earnings and with increased facilities, it is morally certain that dividends will exceed the guaranteed amount. All stock is common stock and shares equally in the dividends. The capital stock of the company has been increased to $250,000, and it has been considered desirable to distribute 10,000 shares among as many holders as possible rather than among a few large purchasers.

Preference will be given subscriptions in order of their receipt.

We refer to any bank or commercial agency for a statement of our financial responsibility. We also have the endorsement of the following gentlemen resident in Racine:
