LEWIS&CONGER 130 and 132 West 42d Street, and Heart Disease. Ninety Per Cent. of it Really Caused From Poor Digestion. Real organic heart trouble is incurable, but scarcely one case in a hundred is organic. The action of the heart and stomach are both controlled by the same great nerves, the sympathetic and pneumogastric, and when the stomach fails to properly digest the food and it lies in the stomach fermenting, gases are formed which distend the organ, causing pressure on the heart and lungs, causing palpitation, irregularity and shortness of breath. The danger from this condition is that the continued disturbance of the heart sooner or later may cause real organic heart trouble and in fact frequently does Furthermore, poor digestion makes the blood thin and watery and deficient in red corpuscles, and this further irritates and weakens the heart. The most sensible thing to do for heart trouble is to insure the digestion and assimilation of the food. This can be done by the regular use after meals of some safe, pleasant and effective digestive preparation, like Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets; which may be found at most drug stores and which contain the necessary digestive elements in a pleasant, convenient form. Thousands of people keep well and vigorous by keeping their digestion perfect by observing the rule of taking one or two of these tablets after each meal, or at least after each hearty meal. Tablets contain U. S. P. pepsin, diastase from malt and other natural digestives which act only on the food, digesting it perfectly and preventing acidity, gases, and the many diseased conditions which accompany a weak stomach. When Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets are used you may know you are not taking into the system any strong medicine or powerful drug, but simply the natural digestive elements which every weak stomach lacks. So widely known and popular have these tablets become that they are now sold by every druggist in the United States, Canada and Great Britain. Literary Notes. The unnamed author of "Miss Toosey's Not many magazines live to print their three-thousandth number, yet the issue of The Living Age for Jan. 4, 1902, bears that number on its title-page. Founded by the late Mr. E. Littell in 1844, this magazine has carried to its readers every Saturday, for nearly forty-eight years, whatever was freshest, most important and most interesting in the whole field of foreign periodical literature. It has retained its essential characteristics through this long period, and while other magazines have come and gone, has strengthened its hold, year by year, upon What "Black Beauty" undertook some years ago to do for the horse is attempted for the cat in Louise Patteson's "Pussy Meow" (Jacobs, 60 cents), which is the autobiography of a cat, in the various stations of life to which fate called her, with the object, as stated in the preface, "to breathe out the joys, the sorrows, and the longings. of a misunderstood and much maligned fellow-creature, and to se- cure for her the consideration which hu- manity owes to the dumb." If cats were dumb they probably would secure more consideration. The story is very prettily told and illustrated, and will appeal strongly to a child's imagination. There are practical suggestions, too, for the care of these charming domestic pets, who have still their votaries to-day, hardly less devoted than the followers of the feline cult in ancient Egypt. In the in- troduction, by Sarah Bolton, we note that an English writer asserts that there is no animal more "capable of attachment" than the domestic cat.
