Throughout history, in times of recession and times of expansion, large, multinational western companies look to the third world - the developing world - as a means of either reaching new markets and new customers, or of tapping natural resources and a cheap workforce. If managed well, such a strategy can offer rich rewards for both the multinational and the host country. But it is equally fraught with difficulties, both moral and financial. This is true today as western firms look to move into China or try to manage the hundreds of billions of dollars they have recently invested in Latin America and South East Asia; and it has been equally true over the past four centuries. The nature of the financial risks and means of reprisal may have altered, but the issues remain constant. The echoes of the past ring loud and clear in today's world, and if the corporations of today refuse to heed the lessons of history, then history is wont to repeat itself with devastating effect.
