GENERAL: I have the honor to inclose an "inventory of all the property belonging to the United States in the building, rooms, offices, and grounds" occupied as office of Chief of Engineers, called for by act approved July 15, 1870. In addition thereto I send an inventory of instruments, copper-plates, lithographic stones, lake survey charts, &c., in charge of Major Wheeler, on duty in this office, belonging to appropriations therefor; also an inventory of property belonging to the Washington Aqueduct, in charge of Major Elliot, and an inventory of property belonging to the public buildings and grounds in charge of Major Michler. The property in charge of these three officers is regularly returned and accounted for to this office in the same manner as all other property of the Engineer Department of the Army.
