Mr. Taylor came to us from north Georgia and well recommended by everybody. He is a world war veteran, experienced in handling machine guns, and has had wide experience in strike work. In addition, while in our employ he has been steadily on the job and conducted himself in a way that has won the respect of our people.

While I know you have nothing to do with the employment department, on the other hand, I just thought a word from you might assist Mr. Taylor in securing a position on the deputy force doing duty around the mines. At any rate, I will appreciate anything you can do for him as I believe he is a good man and would stand hitched under any circumstances.

SIR: While the Coal Mine employees of this Company have not returned to work and are still picketing our mines, it is of great interest to us to note that no serious disturbance has taken place since it became known that companies of the State Militia were on duty in the District.

I think this suggestion was made in your presence when you were good enough to give us an opportunity to put this matter before you.

The mere presence of these uniformed men at various points has proven most helpful, in my judgment, and without firing a shot they have maintained order under severe stress.

It appeared recently that all ore miners, regardless of what Company employed them, were threatening disorder; in fact, the vote has been taken in favor of a strike. I believe that the presence of only a few uniformed officers, who drove over the area to be affected, really resulted in postponing this strike, which is now set for May 4, 1934, and will involve several thousand men.

These comments may appear to be out of order, but I cannot refrain from making them, not only as a commendation and appreciation of the poilcy directed by you and so efficiently carried out by General Persons and his men but also in the hope that you may find it expedient to keep a reasonable number of these men on duty here until this entire situation has cleared up.
