THE

POETICAL WORKS

OF

JOSEPH ADDISON.

WITH

THE LIFE OF THE AUTHOR.

Cooke's Coition.

No charms are wanting to thy artful fong,
Soft as Corelli, but as Virgil ftrong:

From words fo fweet new grace the notes receive,

And Mufic borrows helps the us'd to give.

Thy ftyle hath match'd what ancient Romans knew,
Thy flowing numbers far excel the new,

Their cadence in fuch eafy found convey'd,

That height of thought may feem fuperfluous aid;
Yet in fuch charms the noble thoughts abound,
That needlefs feem the fweets of eafy found.

Accept, great Monarch of the British lays!

The tribute-fong an humble fubject pays:
So tries the artici's lark her early flight,
And foars to hail the God of verfe and Light.
Unrivall'd as thy merit be thy fame,

And thy own laurels fhade thy envy'd name. TICKELL.

[blocks in formation]

If business calls, or crowded courts invite,
Th' unblemish'd Statefman feems to strike my fight;
If in the stage I feek to footh my care,

I meet his foul, which breath'd in Cato there;

If, peafive, to the rural shades I rove,

His hape o'ertakes me in the lonely grove;

'Twas there of good and juft he reafon'd ftrong,

Clear'd fome great truth, or rais'd some ferious fong;
There patient fhew'd us the wife courfe to fteer,
A candid cenfor, and a friend fevere;

There taught us how to live; and, oh! too high
The price of knowledge, taught us how to die.
