F. S. Pease, Buffalo, improved engine oils, improved signal oil, improved armor oil, improved sewing machine oil, naptha, mineral turpentine, extra winter lard oil, extra refined petroleum, paint oil, machine oil, lubricating oil.

These oils are made from Albertine coal, and are certified by men of well known reputation to be most valuable contributions to the arts. We have no doubt of the truth of their statements, but, as we had no opportunity to verify their statements by our own experiments, we refrain from awarding a medal, and refer it to the executive committe.

[These oils, as manufactured by Mr. Pease, having been thoroughly tested in the industrial exhibition in London, and proved of very great excellence, the executive committee awarded the large medal of the society.]

J. Kidder, New York, Kidder's electrical battery. It may be so arranged that either battery can be run separately or both together, at pleasure. The vibrations can be made uniform under different degrees of battery power, by a peculiar arrangement of the apparatus. Coils are combined so as to be concentrated or diffused in their physiological effects. The helices are so arranged as to neutralize each other's currents to any desired extent. We are of opinion that these are improvements, and that the machine is a very useful one....

For speedy and thorough wiping. 3d. For certainty of explosion. 4th. For the readiness by which the gun can be made useless to the enemy. 5th. For great danger to an enemy in handling the gun; 28 successive explosions are made if certain points are touched. 6th. For easy and rapid adjustment in a vertical position. 7th. It can be kept cool however frequently it has been fired. 8th. The recoil is diminished by the adjustment of India rubber springs. 9th. A shell that will certainly explode. Your committee are not practical artillerists, and therefore are unable to form a correct opinion respecting its merits, as they think it a very ingenious invention and award it an honorable mention, for the ingenuity displayed, without intending to express an opinion with respect to its practical value in the fortress or the field.
