Conservator's note 1233.

PORTUGUESE DICTIONARY (London 1701)

Condition when received.

Blind panelled calf sides mounted on newer boards. Rebacked and boards edged with sheepskin. Lettered straight on. Tipped - on endpapers (Repaired by Maltby, 1899). Front fly anotated and detached with title-page, which is poor and fragmenting at edges. Sewing supports - 5 raised cords. Original sewn endbands loose and broken at head. Front board detached, back joint poor.

Work carried out.

Sewing rotten, supports worn and coming away but resewing was decided against. Spine lettered panels removed and retained and spine cleaned. Front leaves washed to separate, guarded repaired and reattached. Linen braids pasted and sewn across spine at supports through outer sections. Spine lined with Japanese tissue using wheat paste, and then with aero linen extending onto inside of boards. New linen thread endband sewn on at head. New false raised bands stuck on. Spine covered with stained alum-tawed calf mounting the previous lettered panels back.
