PREFACE

This is the Fifth Annual Edition of THE FREIGHT TRAFFIC RED BOOK. Our opinion that a book of this kind would be invaluable, not alone to the student of Traffic Management, but also to those actively engaged in traffic and transportation work has been sustained by a host of subscribers who have renewed their subscriptions every year. This and the many special expressions concerning the value and usefulness of the book have been very gratifying to us. While pecuniary benefits from our labors were naturally expected, the reward of greatest treasure to us is the satisfaction derived from the knowledge that we have rendered a helpful service in the traffic field.

It has not been our purpose to prepare an extensive treatise on any of the subjects embraced herein, nor to offer any new idea for solving the many complex transportation problems, but to give in an unbiased and brief, yet comprehensive, form the fundamental principles underlying the transportation business as thus far developed, together with the present laws, rules and practices governing the operation of our great transportation system-all under one cover and in a form that would make it truly a ready-reference book for the busy traffic man and a text-book for the student of Traffic Management.

In preparing a book of this nature on subjects that are so materially affected by constantly changing laws, rules, and practices, it was necessary, in order to treat each subject in an authoritative manner, to procure the assistance of many practical traffic men who are authorities in their respective branches of the traffic field. Grateful acknowledgement, therefore, is made to the railroad, steamship, express, and industrial traffic officials who gave us constructive suggestions, criticisms and other valuable assistance in the preparation of this book.

THE FREIGHT TRAFFIC RED BOOK is revised and reissued each year, on or about December 15th. Supplements necessitated by any changes in any of the sections of this edition will be issued up to November 1, 1925, and sent to all subscribers free of charge.

As it is desired to have THE FREIGHT TRAFFIC RED BOOK continue to increase in circulation and in usefulness as a ready-reference book for all engaged or interested in traffic and transportation work, we hope to be able each year to add new sections. This can best be accomplished by suggestions from subscribers as to what in their opinion would make the book more serviceable to them. Therefore, constructive criticisms and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
