The Art Journal,

A RECORD OF THE FINE ARTS, THE ARTS INDUSTRIAL, AND THE ARTS OF DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE.

MONTHLY.

PUBLISHED Terms-Nine Dollars per Annum, or Seventy-five Cents a Number. Each part contains Three new and highly-finished Engravings on Steel, and from Forty to Fifty Engravings on Wood.

This work has long maintained a high and prominent place in public favornot alone because of its information concerning ART, but for the value and beauty of its engravings and its attractions as a book for the drawing-room. A leading duty of the Editor is to render the subject of ART generally interesting, less by dry and uninviting disquisitions than by popular and frequently illustrated articles, that find readers in all Art-lovers-in all refined circles and intellectual homes.

It is, and has long been, the only ART JOURNAL published-containing information, carefully sought and skillfully condensed, upon every topic concerning which knowledge is requisite to the artist, the student, the amateur, and the connoisseur; while, as a chronicler and teacher, as regards the numerous and important branches of Art-manufacture, its utility has been admitted in every manufactory of Great Britain and the United States.

The Editor and the several contributors to the ART JOURNAL study in every possible way to maintain the high position it has attained in periodical literature -to render it useful as well as interesting to all classes to whom ART is either a luxury or an occupation; considering it an especial duty to continue its popular character.

BENSON J. LOSSING, so well known by his "Pictorial Field-Book of the Revolution," and other popular works, has been engaged, contributing a series of articles under the title of "THE HUDSON-FROM THE WILDERNESS TO THE SEA." These papers have been written expressly for the ART JOUrnal, and are profusely illustrated by Wood Engravings from original drawings by Mr. LOSSING. They were commenced with the volume for 1860, and are still in course of publication.

The present series of the ART JOURNAL contains nearly 150 Engravings on Steel from the pictures in the Private Galleries at Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace, and Osborne, for the publication of which the special permission of Her Majesty Queen Victoria and the Prince Consort has been obtained; and the publication of this collection is continued monthly. The work also comprises a selection of Modern Sculpture, from the best works of British and American artists.

Back Sets of the ART JOURNAL, from the commencement of this series (handsomely bound in crimson cloth, gilt edges), can still be had of the publishers. 1849 to 1854, containing the whole of the Vernon Gallery, 6 vols.-price, $40 1855 to 1860, containing the Royal Collection, 6 vols.-price....
