Strana 162 - Convention to be made public, to the end that the same and every article and clause thereof may be observed and fulfilled with good faith by the United States and the citizens thereof. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed. Done at the City of Washington this...
Strana 28 - The President directs that you cross the Potomac and give battle to the enemy, or drive him south. Your army must move now, while the roads are good.
Strana 198 - An Act making appropriations for the service of the Post Office Department for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1918, and for other purposes...
Strana 28 - They cannot be united by land without exposing both to destruction, and yet they must be united. To send Pope's forces by water to the Peninsula is, under present circumstances, a military impossibility. The only alternative is to send the forces on the Peninsula to some point by water, say Frederibksburg, where the two armies can be united.
Strana 28 - Shenandoah not more than 12,000 or 15,000 can be sent to you. The President advises the interior line between Washington and the enemy, but does not order it. You will immediately report what line you adopt and when you intend to cross the river ; also to what point the reinforcements are to be sent.

Whatever the result may be — and may God grant that I am mistaken in my forebodings — I shall at least have the internal satisfaction that I have written and spoken frankly, and have sought to do the best in my power to avert disaster from my country.
Strana 161 - So soon as steam or other mail packets under the flag of either of the contracting parties shall have commenced running between their respective ports of entry, the contracting parties agree to receive at the post-offices of those ports all mailable matter, and to forward it as directed, the destination being to some regular...
Strana 28 - If your estimate of the enemy's strength was correct, your requisition was perfectly reasonable ; but it was utterly impossible to fill it until new troops could be enlisted and organized, which would require several weeks. To keep your army in its present position until it could be so reinforced, would almost destroy it in that climate.
