PREFACE

This twenty-fourth annual cumulation continues the series of annual volumes interrupted last year by the publication of the three and a half year Supplement to the United States Catalog, which included the material normally constituting the 1921 annual cumulation. Therefore, altho no volume labelled twentythird cumulation has appeared, there has been no break in the record of books published and it has seemed best to call this the twenty-fourth annual cumulation as it really is, and as the volume number of the Index indicates.

The time-honored title-page of the Index does not fully disclose its scope. Besides a full record of books published in the United States, many thousands of pamphlets and documents are also listed. Monographs issued as university or society publications, state and city documents other than annual reports, as well as a liberal selection of federal documents are included. Annual reports, federal, state or city, are entered but once, with the Library of Congress card number if possible. Any attempt to complete the record for them would burden the Index too greatly and the Catalog of United States Public Documents and the Monthly List of State Publications probably suffice for those who desire to know whether or not a report for a given year was published. It is hoped that the subject entries here given for documents are proving of value.

Special acknowledgement is due three long time members of the Index staff for their loyal work on this cumulation. Miss Dorothy Carpenter, Miss Leila Hildreth and Mrs Frances Nolan Murray have given intelligent, experienced help without which the exacting requirements of a publication of this sort could not be fulfilled.

July 27, 1922.
