Since the completion of this Encyclopedia it has been universally recognized as the
most authoritative Encyclopedia of law, incomparably the most exhaustive Digest
of the U.S. Reports, and an eminently satisfactory substitute for the U. S. Reports.
Furthermore, used as an Encyclopedia for quick reference, it is the best, and it
is the first work to consult after the State Digest.

OF GREAT VALUE TO LAWYERS PRACTICING IN STATE COURTS

It has sometimes been urged by lawyers unacquainted with its scope that, as they have no practice in the
Federal Courts, they have no tise for the Encyclopedia of United States Supreme Court Reports. Nothing could
be more fallacious than this argument. There are few points of law that have not at one time or another been
considered by the Supreme Court; and when the Supreme Court has determined a point, what higher authority
can be obtained on that point? Take, for example, the articles in the first volume of U. S. E. There are only
two that can be said to be devoted to practice in the United States Courts-viz., Admiralty, 85 pages, and
Ambassadors and Consuls, 15-100 out of 1064 pages. The other 964 pages treat of matters which arise daily
in any lawyer's practice, such as Abatement, Revival and Survival; Accession, Accretion and Reliction; Accident
Insurance; Accomplices and Accessories; Accord and Satisfaction; Accounts and Accounting; Acknowledgments;
Alteration of Instruments; Armendments; Animals; Appeal and Error; etc.

EFORE his death shrouded a world in gloom he gave Mr. Sellers special permission to publish in his new book Vol. 2, Classics of the Bar, now ready for distribution, his masterful production, The Arrest and Trial of Jesus From a Legal Standpoint. It is indeed a classica judicial review of every phase of the world's most tragic courtroom trial-and cannot be found in any other book in the world.

You also find in the book, Webster in a Murder Case. His
great speech that held a court spellbound for hours and sent
more than one prisoner to a doom of death is given to the
world in full-not a line missing, not a word left out.
You hear also the argument of Wm. J. Hadley in the cele-
brated trial of Gen. Cole for the killing of the noted lawyer,
Hiscock, whom he shot down in Albany's hotel lobby, ex-
claiming as he did so, "He was my best friend, but he has
ruined my simple, childlike wife." Here the defense built
its house. Read this thrilling speech and determine whether
the house was built upon the rocks or upon the sands.

You also stand with the brilliant Voorhees as he makes that great
speech in the damage suit of Kilbourn vs. Thompson that won a verdict
for $100,000 which was set aside by the court upon the ground that
this speech had swept the jury from their feet. We know of no higher
compliment to pay to the wonderful eloquence of this "Tall Sycamore
of the Wabash.' The foregoing list of contents is but a partial one.
The volume contains other stories of legal trials and other forensic
addresses in civil and criminal causes.

Years have been spent in its preparation and it makes a special appeal
to all lovers of real eloquence and what is best in all literature. It is
a book that is "different." One has been set aside for you. Send for
it today.
The volume is strongly and handsomely bound and illustrated.

Law Books and Their Makers

The Edward Thompson Company has never published a law book that was not the best of its kind. The quality of its editorial work is apparent from the reliance which the bench and bar have constantly placed upon its publications. More seems to be expected of us than of any other house which supplies working tools to the legal profession. We are proud of this confidence, and this demand, onerous as it is, will always be met.

The above is preliminary merely to the statement of a fact which we wish to impress upon lawyers everywhere. We never made a better set of law books than the

AMERICAN AND ENGLISH ANNOTATED CASES

Never have we offered to the consulting, trial and brief-making lawyers of the country a work which does so much to lighten their labors and solve their problems. We wish every lawyer who knows and values good books could visit our complete library and editorial rooms, become acquainted with the methods of the expert law writers and editors who are selecting and reporting the ruling cases. We would especially like them to know of the facilities we have for preparing the splendid annotations which brief narrow points by gathering and stating every possible judicial holding and utterance.

Such a visit would be a revelation in modern law book making, but the next best thing is to know the books themselves. There is not a lawyer so learned or so well equipped but that his failure to be acquainted with the AMERICAN AND ENGLISH ANNOTATED CASES is a decided loss to his preparation for big achievements.

We are willing to spend the time and the money to make you know all about this indispensable set of law books offered by a great law publishing house. Yours will be the gain whether you do or do not buy, if you ask us to send free valuable sample cases and notes.
