Ward EP

[blocks in formation]

1. The headnotes under each author throughout the volume contain references to books, magazine articles, and critical essays, or chapters in books.

2. When, in the headnotes, a single critic is mentioned, e.g., Arnold, Lowell, not followed by the title of a book, the student will find the criticism desired by looking under the critic's name in the MISCELLANEOUS CRITICAL WORKS at the beginning of the Bibliography.

3. Additional information may be found under the title of GENERAL BIBLIOGRAPHY in the works concerning the period to which the author belongs.

4. Many references to books and biographical and critical articles concerning authors will be found in the bibliographical sections of the Cambridge History of English Literature. (See page 899.)

5. The student will find valuable biographical and critical articles in the Encyclopedia Britannica and the Dictionary of National Biography; these articles are not listed in this volume.
