TIDE TABLES.

To find the time of high water for any place given in the table below, apply the correction opposite the place to the times of high water for its respective port given for every day on the twelve calendar pages of this Almanac. Add the correction to time of high water when it is plus, and subtract it when it is minus. Example: To find time of high water at Rockland, Me.. on January 8, 1905:

The year 5665 is the third of the 299th cycle of 19 years. It is also an embolis-
mic year, and contains 13 months, the added month being Ve-Adar, of 30 days'
duration. This gives 385 days to the year.

*Subtract or add 11h. 58m. 2s. for the previous or succeeding passage as required Add 9.83s. for each hour east of Washington and subtract same for each hour west. For intermediate dates interpolate.

The azimuths in the above table, applied properly to the magnetic bearing of Polaris at the time of its greatest elongation east or west, will give the true variation of the magnetic needle from a true north direction. and will be of great use to all surveyors and engineers. When the elongation is east the azimuth will be east, and vice versa. At the present time the line of "No Variation" of the needle runs southeasterly from near Toledo, Chio, to a point on the Atlantic Coast about fifty miles southwest of Cape Fear, N. C. East of that line the north end of the needle points west of a true north, and west of that line east of the true north. The country may

therefore be divided into eastern and western magnetic regions. In the "Eastern Region" the bearing of Polaris at its western elongation, if eastward, added to the azimuth, gives the desired variation west, but if westward, the bearing taken from the azimuth gives the variation west. The bearing of Polaris at its eastern elonga- ⠀ tion will be eastward, and the azimuth subtracted therefrom gives the variation west. In the "Western Region' the bearing of Polaris at its eastern elongation, if westward, added to the azimuth, gives the variation east; but if eastward, the bearing taken from the azimuth gives the variation east. The bearing of Polaris at its west-! ern elongation will be westward, and diminished by the azimuth gives the variation east. The azimuths in the table, given for two degree zones, are practically sufficient for all the United States except Alaska. For intermediate latitudes, and dates, the azimuths may be found by proportion sufficiently correct, or exactly by the formula, log sine azimuth equal log sine Polar distance of Polaris, minus log cosine latitude. The surveyor or engineer is on the line of "No Variation" when the bearing of Polaris at greatest elongation is the same as the azimuth

STANDARD TIME.

For the convenience of the railroads and business in general a standard of time was established by mutual agreement in 1883, and it is by this method of calculation that trains are now run and local time is regulated. In accordance with this system the United States, extending from 65° to 125° west longitude, is divided into four time sections, each of 15 of longitude, exactly equivalent to one hour (7° or 30m. on each side of a meridian), commencing with the 75th meridian. The first or eastern section includes all territory between the Atlantic Coast and an irregular line drawn from Buffalo to Charleston, S. C.. the latter city being its southernmost point. The second or central section includes all the territory between this eastern line and another irregular line extending from Bismarck, N. D., to the mouth of the Rio Grande. The third or moun ain section includes all the territory between the last named line and nearly the western borders of Idaho, Utah and Arizona. The fourth or Pacific section includes all the territory of the United States between the boundary of the mountain section and the Pacific Coast. Inside of each of these sections Standard time is uniform, and the time of each section differs from that next to it by exactly one hour.

The following is the table of times based upon the meridian used by the United States and Canada:

The year 1905 corresponds nearly to the year 4602 of the Chinese Era, which is the 42d year of the 76th cycle of 60 years:

6 EXPLANATORY TABLE OF STANDARD TIME-ELONGATION OF POLARIS.

EXPLANATION AS TO TIME USED IN TABLE OF THIS ALMANAC. In the astronomical tables only the seasons, moon's phases and high water are given in Standard time. All the others are given in mean or local time. It is obvious that to express the time of rising and setting of the sun and moon in Standard time would limit the usefulness of such data to the single point or place for which they were computed, while in mean time it is practically correct for places as widely separated as the width of the continent, and persons having the mean time may easily ascertain the correct Standard time of any event by making use of the following table:

To obtain Standard time, add or subtract the figures given to the mean or local time. Standard Correction,

TO FIND THE TIME

By adding the numbers in the annexed table for any given latitude to the time of meridian passage of Polaris (the Pole Star), the time of its greatest western elongation is found. If the same number be subtracted, instead of added, we get the time of greatest eastern elongation. At the time of either elongation the magnetic bearing Lati- Constant Lati- Constant

used subtract these constants from 11h. 58m. 2s., reversing the rule of application to the meridian passage given above for the time of elongations, subacting the constants obtained from the meridian passage for western and adding for eastern elongations.
